Carnival Cruise Line is the largest cruise line in the world, and there are several different class ships, each being built and joining the fleet at different times. We will keep track of the Carnival cruise ships by age, so you don’t have to. Carnival Cruise Line currently has two more Excel class cruise ship on order.
Meet Carnival Celebration®
As Miami is a convenient city for guests to fly in to join the ship, this also makes sense as convenient for travelers. These two new ships are scheduled to debut in 2027 and 2028 and will be powered by LNG. This will bring the number of Excel class ships in Carnival’s fleet to five. The majority of Carnival’s ships offer cruises to the Caribbean and Bahamas that range from three days to over a week. A few vessels are based on the West Coast as well as a couple in Australia.
Card Type
And staterooms aboard Carnival Celebration® are packed with innovative changes to both. It's the way the ring-lit vanity mirror lights you evenly and shadow-free as you get ready. And even those reading lights, recessed into the wall so you can read in bed without waking anyone!
All Carnival Cruise Ships By Age: Newest to Oldest
Carnival Radiance was previously named Carnival Victory, but during a major transformation in Cadiz, Spain in 2021, the ship became completely new. The new-look vessel is part of the Sunshine class and from December 13, 2021, is sailing from the Long Beach Cruise Terminal in California. Whether you use a travel agent or not, make sure to maximize your credit card points when paying for the cruise by using a credit card that offers extra points for travel purchases. This could be the Chase Sapphire Reserve, which offers 3 Ultimate Rewards points on travel and dining (excluding the annual $300 travel credit).
Family Feud Live
The Destiny-class platform continued to be used in various iterations all the way to the Carnival Splendor in 2008. The same year the veteran ship Festivale, the last of the original second-hand fleet, was retired. Since your huge Suite on Carnival Celebration® affords you VIP status, you're in the priority line when getting on and off the ship… plus Suites come with exclusive perks!
Back inside you’ll find a king-size bed, two full bathrooms (one with whirlpool tub), plus a separate living room that sleeps another three. P&O is definitely Carnival’s oldest cruise line, formed in 1822. Carnival Spirit was the very first ship built in the popular Spirit-class and was a totally new design for the cruise line.

The Carnival Celebration arrived during a year of Carnival Cruise Line’s 50th birthday festivities and was christened in Miami, Florida. You could call the Carnival Venezia half new, as she was transferred from sister brand Costa Cruises in 2023 and sailed her inaugural voyage as part of the Carnival Cruise Line fleet on May 29, 2023. The ship underwent a huge multi-million-dollar transformation in Cadiz, Spain, but still kept with her Italian traditional decor. As of December 4, 2023, the newest new-build ship in the fleet is the Carnival Jubilee, the third Excel-class vessel in the fleet.

No matter where you live in the U.S., you're probably within a few hours of a Carnival ship. Carnival Panorama, another sister to Carnival Vista, entered service as the cruise line's flagship on December 11, 2019. She became the first new ship to homeport on the West Coast since Paradise (now Carnival Paradise) in 1998. In 1996, the new Destiny class was introduced, with the Carnival Destiny. At 101,000 GT , it became the largest passenger ship in the world at the time and first to exceed 100,000 tons.
The overarching idea for Carnival's ship deployments is that a large percentage of the U.S. population can reach one of the line's ships by car, saving the cost of flights. However, with two exceptions, they're not giants by today's standards. Carnival ships are all about fun in a very laid-back, unpretentious, nothing-too-fancy sort of way. On July 31, 2021, after numerous delays, the highly anticipated Mardi Gras entered service, sailing year round from Port Canaveral. The fun continues when you reach your port — there’s a huge variety of shore excursions to choose from. Our ships sail to stunning destinations — see just where on the map we go.
However, in 2007, Carnival sold the cruise line to Ambassadors International (an educational travel company that no longer exists, as it filed for bankruptcy in 2011) for $100 million. But as transatlantic passenger ship travel declined, Cunard attempted to better meet market needs by creating an airline (that was unsuccessful). It then turned its attention to cruising and launched Queen Elizabeth 2 to supplement the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. In 1998, Carnival purchased 62% of the line, purchasing the remaining percentage in 1999. Today, Seabourn is still known as an ultra-luxury, small-ship cruise line and consistently receives accolades from travel publications such as Conde Nast Traveler and Travel & Leisure.
A good travel agent will quiz you about your particular interests, travel style and preferences, and steer you to the perfect cruise line, ship, itinerary and cabin for you. They can also help you if something goes wrong just before, during or after your voyage. That said, given the complexity of booking a cruise — there are a lot of decisions to make during the booking process; trust us — we recommend you use a seasoned travel agent who specializes in cruises.
Due to the global pandemic, Carnival Cruise Line has been offloading its older Fantasy-class vessels. Carnival Ecstasy was the final ship to leave the fleet in October 2022. Currently, the 1998-built Carnival Elation is the oldest ship in the fleet. When Carnival Ecstasy departed the fleet in October 2022, Carnival Elation became the oldest ship in the fleet. She is 71,909 gross tons and has a passenger capacity of 2,190 at double occupancy. Carnival Liberty is another Conquest-class vessel that entered service in 2005.
Not to even mention some of the best stern-side views you'll find anywhere. Get ready to relax as you gaze upon Carnival Glory gentle wake from your spacious balcony. Your Scenic Ocean View stateroom aboard Carnival Glory provides the best view of the sea that lies ahead of the ship, with views unlike any on land.
Carnival claims to draw more children than any other cruise line. So perhaps it makes sense that it has one of the most extensive children's programs at sea. The line has formal children's programming and activities for children as young as 2 years old through the age of 17. With the latter, you can team up with your friends and family to play giant versions of Connect 4 Basketball or Simon Flash in front of a live audience.
There's also the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, which brings 2 Ultimate Rewards points on travel and 3 Ultimate Rewards points on dining. Members earn one point for every night they sail on one of the line's ships. On most ships, smoking (including electronic cigarettes) is only allowed in designated outdoor areas and in casinos and nightclubs. On Carnival ships in Australia, smoking is only allowed in designated outdoor areas. The social and value plans cost $18 and $23 per day, respectively, when bought onboard a ship.
